Questions & answers

Ask us anything.

Every question we get asked before someone hires us, answered the way we'd answer it on the phone. Nothing here is softened, and every number is the same number the checkout charges. If your question isn't here, email us and we'll answer it — and then add it to this page.

01

Before you hire us

The questions that come first — including the one about AI.

Is the site really AI-built? Should that worry me?

It's the opposite of a worry — it's why this is fast and affordable. AI does the heavy lifting on the build, and Ian reviews every page by hand before it ships and answers when you call afterward. We're proud of the model: you get agency-quality work without agency hours on the invoice, and a real person still stands behind it.

Do I really get a Starter site in 72 hours?

Yes, on Starter — that's the tier the 72-hour guarantee is on. Day one we talk for ten minutes; day two your site is live; day three you tell us what to change. The only thing that slows it down is waiting on your photos. Care and Custom trade the speed for craft: a polished first draft in a week, and in seven days, respectively.

What do you need from me to start?

Ten minutes and some photos. We ask what you do, where you work, your hours and prices, and what customers ask you all day; you talk, we write it down. That conversation is the whole brief — no forms to wrestle with, no jargon, and no three-week discovery phase billed by the hour.

Why should I trust you to design well?

Look at the work on the main page and judge for yourself — that's why it's the first thing we show. If our own page and our clients' sites aren't well made, you shouldn't buy a website from us.

Who actually answers when something goes wrong?

Ian, in Puyallup, Washington. There is no ticket queue, no offshore handoff, and no chatbot standing in for a person. The help button on this site sends a real notification to a real phone, and email gets a reply, usually within one business day.

02

What it costs

Every number here is read from the same source the checkout charges from.

What does it cost to get started?

Starter is $49/month plus a one-time $149 setup fee — or $470/year — two months off, and no setup fee. Care is $99/month plus $249 setup — or $950/year — two months off, and no setup fee. Custom is $1.5k–7.5k+ one-time, quoted by content + effort. Prepaying a year waives the setup fee on either subscription.

What's the difference between renting and buying?

Starter and Care are subscriptions — we host it, you use it, and it stays maintained. Custom is a one-time purchase: you own the design, the files and the domain outright, and after you approve the final draft we step back. Same team either way; different relationship.

Is there a contract, or a minimum I'm locked into?

No. You cancel yourself — a link or an email, no phone call you have to make during business hours, no retention script, and no early-termination fee. The 6-month mark you will see mentioned is about when the built site becomes yours to keep, not a period you are tied to.

Are there charges that aren't on the pricing page?

No — and two things are named rather than folded in quietly. An online shop is quoted separately because e-commerce is real ongoing work, and new integrations (booking tools, payments, a CRM) are quoted before anything is built. Prices exclude Washington sales tax, which we add on the invoice where it applies. Hosting and domain registration are exempt and itemised separately.

Do I get money back if I cancel?

An annual prepayment is refunded pro-rata, so you are not punished for leaving in month three. The two exceptions are the setup fee and any payment made to own the site early, because both bought work that was already done.

Can I sell products online?

Yes — an online shop (cart, checkout, inventory) is an add-on to any tier. We price it separately because e-commerce is real ongoing work, and we won't bury that cost in a headline price.

03

Living with the site

What happens in the months after launch, which nobody writes a sales page about.

What counts as an edit, and what's free?

An edit is something you want changed — new copy, a swapped photo, a price update — and it comes out of your monthly allowance. A fix is something wrong with what we built: a broken link, a layout that breaks on a phone, a form that doesn't send. Fixes are free on every plan, with no time limit, and they never come out of your edits. When it is genuinely unclear which one it is, we call it a fix.

How many changes do I get, and how fast?

Starter includes two content edits a month, started within two working days. Care includes thirty minutes of real edit time a month, started within one working day, and unused time rolls over for a month. Working days are Monday to Friday, excluding US public holidays.

What if I need more than my allowance in one month?

The first time you go over, we do it free and tell you it happened. After that the extra work is queued to the next month with a date, or quoted if it can't wait — you will never be charged an amount you didn't agree to first. If it keeps happening we'll suggest the bigger plan rather than nickel-and-diming you.

What won't you do?

We don't write your content from scratch, work on a website we didn't build, run your Google Business Profile after we link it, or take out-of-hours emergency work — there is no on-call, and we would rather say so than let you find out on a Sunday. New integrations aren't refused, they're quoted.

Will my site have ads, pop-ups or a cookie banner?

No — and not as a plan tier, as a promise. No advertising, no tracking pixels, no third-party analytics, and no cookie banner, because there is nothing to consent to. The one thing on the page that isn't yours is a small “Made by Techne” credit in the footer, and it is a plain link with no script behind it. Every site is checked against this before it ships: a build that picked up a third-party script fails and does not go live.

Is my site going to go down?

Your site is a set of static files served from Cloudflare's global network — the same network that serves millions of sites. There is no server of ours to go down, no database to fall over, and no software to patch at 2am. We could print a percentage next to that, but a percentage is a payout promise, and we'd rather give you the reason the site stays up than a number to argue about if it ever doesn't.

What if I outgrow Starter?

You move up. Start on a template, and when you want custom design, monitoring or a bespoke build, we carry your content forward into Care or Custom — you're never starting over.

04

Owning it

The part most web companies leave vague on purpose.

Who owns the domain name?

You do, from day one. Not us, not “held on your behalf” — your name is on the registration the day it is bought, and you get the login. That holds on every tier, including the two subscriptions.

What happens to my site if I leave?

Your domain is always yours, whenever you go. The built site becomes yours to export and host anywhere after 6 months; to own it sooner, pay the balance of those 6 months — just the months remaining, at your monthly rate. Prepay the year and you own it outright from day one. Leave before then without doing either, and you keep the domain but not the built site.

Can I move the site to another host later?

Yes. Once the built site is yours it is a set of ordinary static files — we hand them over and you host them wherever you like. Nothing gets switched off to make a point, and there is no proprietary builder holding your pages hostage.

The rest of Dokaz Industries

Techne is one of three things we do. Here is how the others touch your site.

What is Kleos, and do I need it?

Kleos measures whether AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini — actually name your business when someone asks one of them for a plumber or a cafe nearby. It is a paid audit, and ongoing monitoring is included with Care. You don't need it in order to have a website; it is for finding out whether the website is being found.

What is Doxa?

Our free public observatory. We ask frontier AI models the same question bank every week, with web search switched off, and publish how their answers move. Nothing is sold there. It is the research that tells us what AI-readable actually means in practice, and it is open for anyone to read.

How do I get help once I'm a customer?

Email, or the help button in the corner of any page on this site — it pushes a notification straight to a phone. Care clients get priority. Either way, the person who replies is the person who built your site.

If you want the long version

Everything above, written out in full.

Ask a person.

Use the help button in the corner of this page, or email us. It reaches Ian, in Puyallup — no ticket queue, no chatbot standing in for a person, and no obligation to buy anything for asking.
